Formula 1 chooses the Amazon Web Services cloud

On June 29, Amazon Web Services announced that the Formula 1 Group is moving the majority of its IT infrastructure to AWS, in order to take advantage of the power of machine learning and data analytics from the world’s most powerful cloud provider.

Formula 1 will partner with AWS to improve race strategies, data tracking systems, and digital transmissions across a wide variety of AWS services, including Amazon SageMaker, a fully managed machine learning service that enables developers to easily build and deploy machine learning models, AWS Lambda, AWS’ pioneering event-driven serverless computing service and AWS analytics services – to discover never-before-seen metrics that will change the way fans and teams enjoy, experience, and participate in racing.

Formula 1 also selected AWS Elemental Media Services to power its video asset workflows, enhancing the viewing experience for its more than 500 million fans worldwide.

Using Amazon SageMaker, Formula 1 data scientists are training deep learning models with more than 65 years of historical race data, stored in both Amazon DynamoDB and Amazon Glacier. With this information, Formula 1 is able to extract critical statistics on race performance to make race predictions and provide spectators with insight into the decisions and strategies made by teams and drivers.

By streaming real-time race data to Amazon Kinesis, Formula 1 is able to capture and process key performance data for every car during every lap and corner of Formula 1 circuits, with unmatched accuracy and speed. The goal is to enhance the fan experience as much as possible, allowing them to dive deep into the inner workings of their favorite teams and drivers.

“AWS outperforms all other cloud providers in terms of speed, scalability, reliability, global reach, partner community, and breadth and depth of cloud services available to us. By leveraging Amazon SageMaker and AWS machine learning services, we are now able to provide these powerful insights and predictions to fans in real-time. We are also excited that the Formula 1 Motorsports division will be running High Performance Computing workloads in a scalable environment on AWS. This will significantly increase the number and quality of simulations our aerodynamics team can run as we work to develop the new car design rules for Formula 1. ”
